Important Notice: Protecting Our Youth from the Dangers of Fentanyl
Dear Parents/Guardians/Caregivers,
We want to bring your attention to a serious and growing threat to the health and safety of our youth: Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a highly potent synthetic opioid often used in medical settings for severe pain, but it is now being mixed with other drugs, frequently without the user’s knowledge. Even the smallest amount— just a few grains of salt—can be fatal. Fentanyl has been found in counterfeit pills and vape pens, making it alarmingly easy for teens to unknowingly consume. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), teen overdose deaths involving Fentanyl have tripled in the last two years, with over half of all overdose deaths linked to this drug. In some cases, Fentanyl pills have even been made to look like candy, putting teens at further risk without realizing what they are taking.
Here’s how you can help protect your teen:
1. Talk to your teen about the risks of Fentanyl, especially at social events, and encourage open communication.
2. Monitor social media and app usage where teens may be exposed to dangerous drugs.
3. Encourage involvement in extracurricular activities, community service, and school organizations to combat feelings of isolation.
4. Report suspicions anonymously using the district’s tool available on our website, or visit Safe School Helpline or call 1-800-418-6423.
5. Watch for changes in behavior, new friend groups, or increased isolation.
6. Seek help if you suspect substance use or mental health challenges.
To learn more, we invite you to a Fentanyl Awareness Parent Workshop on October 30, 2024, at 10 am or 5 pm at the Mercedes Auditorium, located at 837 S. Ohio St., Mercedes, TX. This workshop will provide vital information on the dangers of Fentanyl, including how to protect our youth. Additionally, parents who attend will receive a free NARCAN medication, which is used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, including those caused by Fentanyl. This can be a lifesaving tool in an emergency.
Together, we can help our youth make better choices to avoid this dangerous drug and to keep it out of our schools and communities.

Estimados Padres/Tutores/Cuidadores,
Queremos llamar su atención sobre un peligro seria y creciente para la salud y seguridad de nuestros jóvenes: el Fentanilo. El Fentanilo es un opioide sintético altamente potente que a menudo se utiliza en entornos medicos para tratar el dolor severo, pero ahora se está mezclando con otras drogas, frecuentemente sin que el usuario lo sepa. Incluso la cantidad más pequeña—solo unos pocos granos de sal—puede ser fatal. Se ha encontrado Fentanilo en pastillas falsificadas y en vaporizadores, lo que facilita alarmantemente que los adolescentes lo consuman sin darse cuenta. Según los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), las muertes por sobredosis entre adolescentes relacionadas con el Fentanilo se han triplicado en los últimos dos años, y más de la mitad de todas las muertes por sobredosis están vinculadas a esta droga. En algunos casos, las pastillas de Fentanilo incluso se han hecho para parecerse a dulces, poniendo a los adolescentes en mayor riesgo sin darse cuenta de lo que están tomando.

Para obtener más información, le invitamos a asistir a un Taller de Concienciación sobre el Fentanilo para Padres el 30 de octubre de 2024, a las 10 am o 5 pm en el Auditorio de Mercedes, ubicado en 837 S. Ohio St., Mercedes, TX. Este taller proporcionará información vital sobre los peligros del Fentanilo, incluyendo cómo proteger a nuestros jóvenes. Además, los padres que asistan recibirán un medicamento NARCAN gratuito, que se utiliza para revertir los efectos de las sobredosis de opioides, incluidas las causadas por el Fentanilo. Este puede ser un recurso que salve vidas en una emergencia. Juntos, podemos ayudar a nuestra juventud a tomar mejores decisiones para evitar esta peligrosa droga y mantenerla fuera de nuestras escuelas y comunidades.
