Students across Mercedes Independent School District showcased their reading knowledge, teamwork, and love of literature during this year’s Battle of the Books competition. Teams from elementary, middle, and high school campuses worked collaboratively to answer dozens of questions based on four pre-selected book titles.
The event brought together students, librarians, educators, and school leaders in a shared celebration of literacy, reconnecting current students with former teachers and librarians while highlighting the district’s continued commitment to reading and academic excellence.
Mercedes ISD proudly recognizes the grade-level champions:

Ruben Hinojosa Elementary School: Liliana Gonzalez, Tyler Flores, Alessandra Gonzalez, and Amanda England-Ortega
(Librarian: Lynda Garza)

Sgt. Manuel Chacon Middle School: Serenity Cano, Jocelyn E. Mendoza, Zarela Ortiz, and Layla Garza
(Librarian: Corina Acosta)

Mercedes High School: Carlie Rabel, Adrian Gonzales, Nora Gonzalez, and Fijilis Estrada
(Librarian: Dahlia Saldana)

In addition, Battle of the Books Jr. winners from Sgt. William G. Harrell Elementary School were recognized for their outstanding performance: Camila de Leon, Luis Anguiano, Kameela Pedraza, and Logan Avila, under the guidance of librarian Lynda Garza.
These winning teams will go on to represent Mercedes ISD at the Region One ESC Regional Battle of the Books Competition in February. The district congratulates all participants and thanks the librarians and staff who helped make this celebration of reading a success!
