Mercedes ISD Statement – For Immediate Release
Mercedes Independent School District is committed to transparency and open communication with our school community. We are providing the following information to ensure our families, staff, and community members are informed about a serious matter involving a district employee.
The District received information about an alleged improper relationship between a Mercedes high school teacher and a student. Upon receiving this information, District administration immediately placed the employee on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. In accordance with state law and District policy, the District promptly reported the matter to the appropriate authorities, including law enforcement, Child Protective Services, and the State Board for Educator Certification.
MISD worked collaboratively with the Mercedes Police Department throughout the investigation. The individual in question has been taken into custody by the Mercedes Police Department.
The safety and well-being of our students is, and will always remain, our top priority. MISD does not tolerate inappropriate conduct by employees involving students. District administration is currently in the process of terminating the employment of this individual.
While we understand the community may have additional questions, this matter involves both a personnel issue and an active, ongoing legal matter. For that reason, the district will not be providing additional details or commentary at this time.
MISD appreciates the timely and thorough response from the Mercedes Police Department, and the individuals who stepped forward to report their concerns. The District continues to reinforce the message, “If you see something, say something,” and encourages prompt reporting of concerns to law enforcement or trusted adults.

El Distrito Escolar Independiente de Mercedes está comprometido con la transparencia y la comunicación abierta con nuestra comunidad escolar. Compartimos la siguiente información para asegurar que nuestras familias, personal y miembros de la comunidad estén informados sobre un asunto serio que involucra a un empleado del distrito.
El distrito recibió información sobre una supuesta relación inapropiada entre un profesor de una escuela secundaria de Mercedes y una estudiante. Al recibir esta información, la administración del Distrito colocó de inmediato al empleado en licencia administrativa mientras se lleva a cabo la investigación. De conformidad con la ley estatal y la política del Distrito, el asunto fue reportado oportunamente a las autoridades correspondientes, incluyendo a las fuerzas del orden público, Servicios de Protección Infantil (CPS) y la Junta Estatal de Certificación de Educadores.
MISD trabajó de manera colaborativa con el Departamento de Policía de Mercedes durante toda la investigación. La persona en cuestión ha sido puesta bajo custodia por el Departamento de Policía de Mercedes.
La seguridad y el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes es, y siempre será, nuestra máxima prioridad. MISD no tolera conductas inapropiadas por parte de empleados que involucren a estudiantes. La administración del Distrito se encuentra actualmente en el proceso de terminar la relación laboral con esta persona.

MISD agradece la respuesta oportuna y exhaustiva del Departamento de Policía de Mercedes, así como a las personas que dieron un paso al frente para reportar sus inquietudes.
