Members of the 1986 Varsity Tigers State Finalist baseball team gathered for a special moment of tribute and remembrance for their head coach, the late Don Derryberry, during the 2024 Mercedes Knights of Columbus tournament. The team was joined by Chris Derryberry, son of the late Coach Derryberry.
The team honored the impact of Coach Derryberry’s lasting legacy and the bonds of teamwork and friendship that were forged under his guidance, along with his passion for the game and unwavering commitment to excellence.

March is Music in Our Schools Month, and our high school bands set the stage for a month of musical celebration as they played their UIL Concert programs at the Queen City Band Festival at the MISD Auditorium last night. 🎼🎶🎺

A big Tiger shout out to all Mercedes Academic Academy students who took the TSIA test this week. Administered by MISD GEAR UP facilitators and MAA Student Advisor Jacob Martinez, this testing is a crucial step in determining college readiness. The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment helps determine students' preparedness for entry-level college coursework in English Language Arts Reading (ELAR) and mathematics.
Exemption from this assessment is granted to students meeting college readiness benchmarks on the SAT, ACT, STAAR English III or Algebra II EOCs, or those who successfully complete the high school College Preparatory Course. Parents and guardians had the chance to connect with teachers, gain insight on their student's progress, and explore the opportunities offered at the campus. Let's give a Tiger round of applause to our talented Cosmetology students who took part in the District 13 SkillsUSA Texas Leadership and Skills Competition held at TSTC in Harlingen earlier this month.
Each student showcased their skills and creativity in various categories like Braiding, Flat Nail Art, Fantasy Hairstyling, Photo Panel, Women’s Cutting Edge and Cosmetology Salon. ALL 14 students received a BLUE RIBBON, advancing them to the State Competition on April 5-6 in Corpus Christi. 🌟🏅👏

Under the guidance of CTE instructor Sarah Leal, 19 Mercedes ISD students are gearing up to take the official Texas Cosmetology Operator License exam this March, which includes both a written and practical portion. All week the students have been studying and undergoing practice sessions. Let’s give these CTE students a round of applause as they prepare diligently to have the chance to earn their certification as high school students.
