This morning W.B. Travis Elementary students had the opportunity to visit with area businesses, law enforcement agencies and community professionals representing many different roles at the school's Career Fair. Superintendent of Schools Maria J. Chavez welcomed both the representatives and students to the event, and the district is grateful to everyone who took the time to help our students explore future career interests. Mercedes ISD families attended the Region One GEAR UP Second Annual Family Engagement Institute this week. The theme was “Familia is Everything,” and attendees were encouraged and empowered with information to prepare their student(s) transition to college, career or military. The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) held its first meeting of the school year at the MISD Auditorium this morning. Officers were elected at the start of the meeting, including Chairman Christina Barrientes, Vice-Chairman Yessenia Colunga, and Secretary Jose Vasquez. A presentation about the dangers of Fentanyl abuse was given by PRC11 (Prevention Resource Center 11), a program of Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas.
Thank you to the parents and staff who attended, and to Mercedes FD Chief Javier Campos for also sharing his knowledge and expertise. We would like to extend an invitation to join us at the next SHAC session, scheduled to take place virtually on January 24, 2024. Jaylynn Luna, a junior at Mercedes Early College Academy and Varsity Tiger Cheerleader, showcased her talents with the SOSA (Spirit of San Antonio) Pom Squad during the University of Texas at San Antonio v. Rice University football game on Saturday, November 11 at the Alamodome.

Mercedes GEAR UP students recently embarked on a one-of-a-kind adventure at the historic Sea Turtle Inc. to learn more about conservation and stewardship. 🌟
It was a unique opportunity for our Mercedes students to engage in meaningful conservation efforts while enhancing their leadership and teamwork skills. Students explored different topics relating to taxonomy, laboratory techniques and real-world conservation efforts. After dissecting squids and meeting the current sea turtles under care, participants concluded their experience by conducting a sea turtle injury assessment. #MISDpride #MISDdrive #MISDsuccess #GEARUPworks

Mercedes EMS recently spoke with Ms. Lizcanoo's Principles of Law class at Chacon Middle School about the type of equipment they use out in the field and how it's used. They demonstrated what they carry in their EMS Unit. They also spoke about their experiences and informed students about the importance of "THE ROLE OF EMS"... which is the title of the lesson the Principles of Law class at both Chacon Middle School and Harrell Middle School have been covering.







Mercedes High School welcomed FFA Chapters and sponsors from across the Rio Grande Valley for the Citrus Valley District FFA Leadership Development Events (LDEs) held Friday, Nov. 10. It was a true display of collaboration as staff worked together to ensure smooth logistics while RGV LEAD Ambassadors extended hospitality to visiting schools and judges, including TAMUK AGED students who helped judge the speaking events.
